Born in Madrid in 1976 and forged in the creative crucible of New York, Lucas Tobal’s journey into photography is anything but conventional. As a teenager, he discovered photography by turning an unused bathroom in his basement into a makeshift darkroom, pulling prints from a toilet bowl and developing his eye for the unexpected. This unpolished, raw beginning perfectly reflects the essence of his work—bold, abstract, and unafraid of chaos.
Tobal’s art captures the tension between light and shadow, order and disorder. His early ventures into poetry for underground zines in the '90s shaped his ability to tell stories, not just through words, but through fragmented and emotionally charged visuals. Having dabbled in commercial projects for travel magazines and advertising, he has always resisted convention, preferring to blur the lines between reality and abstraction.
Now based in Zurich, Tobal’s photography delves into the emotional resonance of entropy and imperfection, creating pieces that demand more than just a casual glance. His work invites viewers to confront the hidden beauty in darkness, the poetry in imperfection, and the emotional tension that lies in between. Each image is a story waiting to be deciphered, a visual experience that lingers long after you’ve left the gallery.
For collectors and art lovers alike, Lucas Tobal’s work offers an invitation to own a piece of that tension, to hang it on your wall, and let it challenge your perception every day.
